#capedawnproject – the final quarter Jul-Aug-Sep 2019

Of the 52 weeks in a year we have managed to photograph 38 weekly sunrises, 73% not bad for a first attempt at a commitment like this. However, the real challenge is going to be making up the 14 “missing” weeks. Several of them were in the summer months and require a very early alarm to get us there in time, but in all honesty the results to date are incentive enough to get out there and complete the mission.

July to September are Cape Town’s rainy months and after 3 years of severe drought we have had a very wet winter this year.  In spite of this we have managed to complete most weeks in these 3 months, with the help of very warm clothes, hot chocolate and rusks.

There have been mornings when I’ve felt that “I’ve seen this picture before” so I needed to change the approach a little. Prior to the drought we have devastating fires on Ou Kaapse Weg, with all the rain this winter the fynbos has come alive and with each week we have seen more and more plants and flowers emerging on the mountain, making for spectacular subject matter in the dawn light.

I also experimented a little with multiple exposures; whereby the second shot is superimposed on the first. With the mountains this gives a multidimensional feel to the image, and with the actual sunrise, the shot before and after the sun breaks the horizon becomes a mini time-lapse image.
