Time-lapse discoveries

The first time I experimented with time-lapse was during one of our #capedawnproject mornings, capturing the changes to the landscape as the sun rose above the mountains was good experimental subject matter. Just using the default iPhone settings, I soon realised that the fixed 5second interval was not good enough for different types of events.  Searching the Internet for solutions to this problem I discovered OSnap! This has proven to be an excellent open source App providing all the options I need and more.

OSnap! allows you to set time interval, choose the camera (front or back), set the resolution and delay the start, as well as many other features.

For sunrises I use a 3second interval when there is a lot of activity in the sky, like moving clouds or mist. But during times of less activity I put the interval up as high as 15-30 seconds, changing it back to 3seconds just before the sun begins to show.

Rendering the video is done on my phone, at which point you can choose the quality (Mbps) and frames per second i.e. how fast you want it to playback. In some cases I also render the video several times, each with different interval settings, and then combine the frames I want from each with iMovie, this way I can get the best speeds for each phase of the sunrise. It’s a bit more work but the results are worth it.  There are several other Apps that will do more or less the same as OSnap!, but OSnap! does it for me; its reliable, easy to use and its Free! Compliments to the developers!
